POIESIS is a subscription based reference and publishing service offering searchable access to the full text of hundreds of current, recent, and back issues of a growing number of philosophy journals. Every word in every available issue is fully searchable, including thousands of articles, book reviews, and dissertation listings, as well as all abstracts, footnotes, and bibliographic listings. Uniquely structured around journals in philosophy, POIESIS includes dozens of journals published by philosophical societies, departments, university presses, and commercial publishers in several countries. While annual subscriptions to POIESIS are only available to institutions, the tables of contents of all issues in the database are freely available to all visitors who register here.

Over 1300 issues and 135,000 pages of text from 40 journals are now in the POIESIS database, and most of these journals are not available in electronic format from any other service. POIESIS will ultimately contain 100 philosophy journals, and more than 70 journals have already been licensed for the project.

A POIESIS subscription allows users to search the entire database for any word or combination of words, and to view up to a paragraph of text around each "hit." Search results are presented on a results map, allowing users to see the article title, the journal name and issue, and all of the "hits" with a limited display of text. Abstracts, if available, are also viewable. This functionality is provided for all issues of all journals in the database. In addition, most journal publishers permit full text display of their journals. If the subscribing institution has a print or electronic subscription to such a journal, POIESIS allows users to click on the paragraph display and jump to the full text display of that journal at no extra charge. Users can also browse or search the available issues from these titles.

All issues of several journals are now available in POIESIS, and all back issues of Augustinian Studies, Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy, Idealistic Studies, International Journal of Applied Philosophy, International Philosophical Quarterly, New Nietzsche Studies, New Vico Studies and Radical Philosophy Review will be added to the database in 2005. Many back issues of American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, The Owl of Minerva, and the Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association will also be added this year.
