This textbase is designed to provide basic tools, in the form of texts and lexica, for the study of Armenian from the classical period, with a focus on the oldest states of the language. For texts: the textbase contains Biblical and theological translations and native texts up to the time of Movses Xorenats'i in the late eighth century. Every word in these texts has been lexically analyzed, for its dictionary form and part of speech, and is searchable on each of these. For lexica: four major Armenian dictionaries have been included, complete or in substantial excerpts. Together, these cover the complete range of the classical language down to the latest periods. The four lexica are supplemented by Greek and Armenian wordlists. Uniquely, all words of all texts and all entries in every dictionary have been linked together through a 'base lexicon' which allows readers to find every occurrence of every word throughout.

Texts

  • Full text of major Biblical and theological translations (Gospel of John, of Luke, the books of Deuteronomy, Jona; Eusebius of Emesa, the Commentary on Genesis)
  • Full text of classic native works: Koriwn (the biography by this author on Mashtots', the inventor of the Armenian alphabet), the "History" of Agat'angeghos (concerning the christianization of Armenia), Eznik's theological treatise, commonly called "Against the Sects"; the "History of the Persian War" by Eghishe; Movses Xorenats'i's "History of Armenia"
  • Every word in these texts is lexically analyzed, with part of speech information, and linked to the lexica. Moving the mouse over the text brings up a window for each word, indicating its part of speech:
  • Armenian translation and Greek text of Gospel of John and the Book of Jona. These are presented so that the matching words and phrases in each text are highlighted as the mouse moves over the text.

Lexica

  • The complete text of the most important lexicon for classical Armenian, the Nor Baṙgirk' Haykazean Lezui (Venice, 1836)
  • The philological sections of Ačaṙyan's Hayeren Armatakan Bararan (HAB; Armenian Root Dictionary, Yerevan 1926-35), in fully indexed form
  • The complete text of Matthias Bedrossian's New Dictionary Armenian - English, first published in Venice in 1879
  • The late medieval Armenian dictionary Baṙgirk' Hayoc', first printed in 1698 and presented from the 1975 Erevan edition, with entries identified and indexed
  • Two word-lists indexing lexical material from various sources, one linked to Greek sources (12197 entries)

The Base Lexica

  • The Base Armenian Lexicon lists every distinct Armenian head word form identified within the lexica and texts included in the textbase: 74943 forms in all.
  • Similarly, the Base Greek Lexicon lists every distinct Greek form identified within the textbase: 20196 entries in all.
  • For each form, the base lexicon gives the number of occurrences throughout the text base, with homonyms separated according to their lexical identity.
  • A hypertext link on every lexical entry gives access to every occurrence of this word, in every form, throughout the textbase, both in lexica and analysed texts.

Searching and navigation

  • Go to any part of the textbase by drop-down menus and links from the home page
  • Find any Armenian or Greek word via an online keyboard, with a 'type-ahead' prompt
  • View hits organized by lexica and texts
  • View hits in 'key word in context' display, linked to the full text with highlighted hits
