Verlagsinformation :: Publisher's information

For decades, even hundreds of years after publication, researchers of all kinds, all over the world, turn to newspapers for information relating to a wide variety of research needs. Gale has partnered with the British Library to create one of the richest collections of primary source material in the world. Unparalleled in depth and scope, British Library Newspapers consists of two major collections from the British Library which span 300 years of newspaper publishing in the U.K.: 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers and 19th Century British Library Newspapers. The two collections combined contain nearly three million pages and 40 million articles and can be purchased separately or together depending upon your institution's needs and requirements.

Taken as a whole, the huge production of newspapers in Britain provides an enormous resource for research on all subjects for all of the U.K., both urban and rural. The bulk of advertising, particularly for new books and theatrical performances, has proved especially useful for historians. Cultural trends, political currents and social problems are reflected in these newspapers and give new freshness and immediacy to historical events.

17th & 18th CENTURY BURNEY COLLECTION NEWSPAPERS

The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (b. 1757- d. 1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library. The 700 or so bound volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, however there are also some English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies. The original Burney volumes are now in a fragile condition and have been restricted from ordinary reading room use. Up until now, the only access has been through microfilm. This digital collection will put these early newspapers into the hands of scholars and researchers, opening up new areas of study in English history as well as in many other areas.

19th CENTURY BRITISH LIBRARY NESWPAPERS

19th Century British Library Newspapers provides the serious researcher with the most comprehensive range of national and regional newspapers in Victorian Britain ever made available in a digital collection. The papers themselves have been carefully selected by an editorial board from the British Library whose purpose was to provide a broad yet detailed view of British life in the 19th century: from business to sport, from politics to entertainment and the arts. The collection is made up of daily and weekly publications and reflects Britain's growing role as a superpower in the 19th century world. Each collection is an essential research tool for the study of British history and culture at crucial periods in the nation's development as a world power. The collections support the study of colonial history, genealogical research, politics, urban studies and media courses.
