More than 500 leading academics were involved in the creation of Encyclomedia's textual content, which is enhanced by over 40,000 short quick-reference entries, more than 10,000 images and 1,000 film clips and animations. Content Management Platform The Encyclomedia system, which is based on a content management platform, is coupled to - and rendered interactive by - a search engine that enables and encourages users to create connections between content from different disciplines. Encyclomedia can thus be considered as the next step on from traditional paper-based encyclopedias (e.g. the Encyclopedia Britannica) and on line encyclopedias such as Wikipedia, which are both based on a traditional system of entry classification and indexing. Semantic search engine Encyclomedia's search engine is based on a semantic network representing the relationships between terms and events, which users can explore interactively. Concepts that are semantically-related to their original query may be investigated by users, thus forming the basis for subsequent searches. The content of the semantic network is organized in a tree structure, in which the points of connection, or nodes, are entries of various types, e.g. disciplines, concepts, people, geographical areas. As they move about the nodes that make up the semantic network, users can select the subject areas that interest them and use them to create their own interactive timelines. For example, a user may decide to search for information concerning a particular artistic or cultural movement (Romanticism, the Enlightenment), a specific painting technique (oil painting) or a form of representation (portrait, still life). This is possible because of the way the information contained in Encyclomedia has been classified, catalogued and "anchored" to the nodes of the semantic network, which gives it an added depth of meaning that goes beyond the words employed. Accordingly, the system does not simply search for keywords but rather is able to assess the semantic meaning of a search query. In addition, it uses special algorithms to assign different weight values to search results based on the search query, ensuring that the information that is considered most relevant to the specified area of interest is given priority. For example, the results for a search query on Painting in the 1500s will have Michelangelo in first place, whereas he would be assigned less relevance in a search query concerning the literature of the same period Interactive timelines Tool which enables the creation of comparative timelines on the basis of parameters defined by the user (e.g. "French painting from the 13th to the 15th century", "what was happening in 1711 in Italy?" or "could Giuseppe Verdi have travelled by car?"). Interactive timelines feature a drag-and-drop style tool that allows users to measure the time distance between two events on a timeline. Interactive historical atlas Geographical map on which the information (e.g. borders, countries, names) changes in accordance with the year defined by the user. Both of the above tools are able to draw on all of the data contained in the content management platform. Content Management Platform Tutto il sistema, basato su una piattaforma di Content Management, è collegato e reso interattivo da un motore di ricerca che esalta la possibilità di stabilire collegamenti interdisciplinati tra tutti i contenuti presenti nella piattaforma.:possiamo dire che EncycloMedia è in qualche modo il superamento delle enciclopedie, sia di quelle originariamente cartacee (Britannica...) sia di quelle nate su Internet (Wikipedia): entrambe hanno alla base un sistema di catalogazione e indicizzazione dei lemmi "tradizionale". Il motore semantico Il motore di ricerca che sta alla base di EncycloMedia si basa su una rete semantica di relazioni tra i termini e gli eventi: una rete che può essere navigata in modo interattivo. Ognuno dei concetti semanticamente vicini a quello selezionato può infatti costituire un ulteriore argomento di interesse, dal quale far partire una nuova esplorazione. Nel motore semantico i contenuti sono raccolti in un'alberatura i cui punti di congiunzione sono voci di diverse tipologie: discipline, concetti, eventi, personaggi, aree geografiche. Spostandosi nei diversi nodi che compongono il motore semantico è possibile selezionare gli argomenti per la costruzione delle cronologie interattive. Ad esempio, si potrà cercare tutto ciò che riguarda un movimento artistico o culturale (il Romanticismo, l'Illuminismo), piuttosto che una particolare tecnica pittorica (la Pittura a olio) o un tipo di raffigurazione (il ritratto, la natura morta...). Questo è possibile perché tutte le informazioni presenti in EncycloMedia sono state classificate, categorizzate e "ancorate" ai diversi nodi di questa ricchissima rete e sono state in tal modo arricchite di significati ad un livello più profondo rispetto alle parole utilizzate. Il sistema, insomma, non si limita a individuare i termini in quanto semplicemente scritti, come avviene normalmente nelle ricerche informatiche, ma è in grado di valutarne la valenza semantico, il significato. Inoltre, attraverso particolari algoritmi, il sistema attribuisce delle "pesature" alle diverse informazioni in funzione dell'argomento ricercato, in modo da evidenziare nella ricerca le informazioni più importanti rispetto ad un determinato "centro di interesse": in tal modo Michelangelo risulterà al primo posto in una ricerca che riguarda la Pittura del Cinquecento, mentre minore rilevanza avrà nella Letteratura del medesimo periodo. Le cronologie interattive Un motore che permette di "costruire" cronologie comparative a partire da qualsiasi parametro inserito dall'utente ("pittura francese dal XIII al XV secolo", oppure "che cosa accadeva nel 1711 in Italia", o ancora "Giuseppe Verdi avrebbe potuto viaggiare in automobile"). Uno strumento grafico di tipo drag and drop permette inoltre di misurare la distanza temporale fra due eventi presenti nella stessa cronologia. Atlante Storico interattivo Una carta geografica le cui informazioni le sue informazioni (confini, stati, nomi) si aggiornano a seconda dell'anno impostato dall'utente.
