Shakespeare's Globe on Screen 2 (2016-2018) includes 9 landmark productions from the theatre's most recent seasons, including two productions from Emma Rice's tenure as Artistic Director and the first production from the indoor Jacobean theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. These films showcase the Globe's two unique playing spaces on Bankside and how different artists respond to them. Each performance transports viewers directly into the standing yard of the world famous Globe or the magical candlelit interior of the captivating new Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
- Measure for Measure:
Boasting a superb cast and marking the final summer production from artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, the play is a wickedly black comedy of secret identities, sexual politics and manipulation. The production features stellar performances from Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincent and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo.
- The Merchant of Venice:
Multi Tony and Olivier Award-winning stage and screen star Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall) takes the role of enigmatic Shylock alongside his own daughter Phoebe Pryce, playing Jessica, in Jonathan Munby's moving production of The Merchant of Venice. This iconic tale of the battle between greed and love, paired with Pryce's memorable interpretation, makes this a must see production.
- Richard II:
Simmering with both violence and comedic irony, Simon Godwin's Richard II features a tour de force performance from Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey, Philomena) in the title role. A production that delves into the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it, the rich colours and lavish costumes of this sumptuous historical masterpiece transfer superbly to the screen.
- The Duchess of Malfi:
The Duchess of Malfi, featuring Hollywood star Gemma Arterton in the title role, is a thrilling combination of brilliant coups de théâtre, horrific set-pieces and vivid characters, all lit by Webster's obsessional imagination. Gemma Arterton returned to the Globe to play the Duchess in this sell-out production. This most intimate Jacobean tragedy proved a truly sensational curtain-raiser for the Globe's very first season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This is the first ever theatrical production to be filmed entirely in candlelight and is a recording of the live performance from the Globe Theatre.
