The Eastern Miscellany is a significant chronicle of Republican Era China, covering over 45 volume years of content (interrupted only in 1942). Issued in Shanghai, Changsha, Chongqing, and Hong Kong, The Eastern Miscellany was published during a period of extraordinary transition in Chinese society, from the collapse of the Qing Dynasty and two millennia of Imperial China, through periods of warlord rule, Japanese invasion, the Second World War, communist revolution, and the formation of today's People's Republic of China. The editorial staff of included a number of prominent Chinese intellectuals, with article contributions from Chinese intelligentsia and foreign writers.
