Verlagsinformation :: Publisher's information Abbreviationes, the first electronic dictionary of medieval Latin abbreviations, is a powerful database designed for use in both learning and teaching of medieval Latin paleography. Abbreviationes is also a highly useful reference and research tool. It consists of a database (Main Dictionary) and a database application (Abbreviationes) - a mature, robust, and reliable program, suitable for everyone from the novice to the expert. An electronic dictionary is immeasurably more effective than a printed dictionary in terms of speed and efficiency. Furthermore, our database currently comprises over 70,000 entries, nearly five times as many as you would find in the printed dictionaries by Walther, Chassant, De la Braña, Cappelli, and Pelzer combined. Thanks to annual updates and enhancements, the Main Dictionary will continue to grow steadily. Abbreviationes is a standard reference work and reflects the state of contemporary scholarship. Abbreviationes was developed for the Macintosh Operating System (Mac OS). Under Windows, Abbreviationes requires a Macintosh emulator such as Basilisk II (Open Source), or SoftMac from Emulators Inc. Apart from the Macintosh emulation software, which is a requirement for Windows, Abbreviationes is identical on both platforms. Abbreviationes is bundled with a copy of Basilisk II that comes preinstalled and readily configured to get you started quickly. Abbreviationes runs on any Macintosh or Power Macintosh under Mac OS 7 or later (compatible with Mac OS 9 version 9.2 and Mac OS X version 10.3). Basilisk II allows users to run Abbreviationes under Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Abbreviationes is distributed on a hybrid CD-ROM, making installation a snap under both Mac OS and Windows. The CD-ROM also includes the User's Guide in electronic form. Abbreviationes Online can be used with any device that has a Web browser installed and has access to the World Wide Web. In order to view Abbreviationes Online correctly, you will need an HTML 4 and CSS2 compliant Web browser. When sufficient RAM has been installed, Abbreviationes will run comfortably alongside image-processing and word-processing programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word. The Kodak Photo CD system offers a powerful tool for viewing, storing, and working with digital images. Thus, a CD-ROM drive is all you need to read, transcribe, and edit medieval Latin manuscripts from the comfort of your own desktop! |
