The new edition of Comprehensive Membrane Science and Engineering will be an interdisciplinary and innovative reference work on membrane science and technology. Written by leading researchers and industry professionals from a range of backgrounds, chapters will elaborate on recent and future developments in the field of membrane science and explore how the field has advanced since the previous edition published in 2010. Since the last edition published, scientists have been pushing membranes to their limits across a variety of applications and operations, such as molecular separation, fractionation, concentrations, purifications, clarifications, emulsifications, crystallization, etc., in both liquid and gas phases and in a wide spectrum of operating parameters such as pH, temperature and pressure. Membranes and membrane processes are therefore an essential part of everyday life.

Chapters are written by academics and practitioners across a variety of fields including chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, physics, biology and food science. Each volume covers a wide spectrum of applications and advanced technologies, such as new membrane materials (e.g. thermally rearranged polymers, polymers of intrinsic microporosity and new hydrophobic fluoropolymer) and processes (e.g. reverse electrodialysis, membrane contractors, membrane crystallization, membrane condenser, membrane dryers and membrane emulsifiers) that have only recently proved their full potential for industrial application.

Each chapter in the second edition of Comprehensive Membrane Science and Engineering is even more comprehensive than the previous edition, with authors elaborating on the latest advances in membrane science and linking fundamental research with real-life practical applications, using specially selected case studies of medium and large-scale membrane operations to demonstrate successes and failures and anticipate future developments in the field.

Attention will be given to the most recent industrial developments of membrane technologies in large installations (e.g. in desalination wastewater treatment, gas separation, etc.) and special attention will also be given to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine as membrane use is evolving so rapidly in the biomedical forum. The strategy of process intensification and its interconnections with membrane engineering will be covered, as well as the latest progress in countries where membrane science is an emerging research field, such as India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive coverage: Cutting-edge research will provide readers with the knowledge and tools to understand the latest theory and apply it in practice
  • Interdisciplinary approach: Chapters written by academics and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds offers readers a variety of perspectives on how membrane science and engineering research can be best applied in practice across a range of industries
  • Providing the theory behind the limits, advantages, future developments and failure expectations of local membrane operations in emerging countries to enable researchers in developed countries to produce suitable and affordable membranes technologies for these regions
  • Multimedia Features: Introductory videos, hyperlinked references and further readings, cross-references and widgets will provide readers with a 'one-stop' resource to fully support their research in this area

Readership

A valuable tool for researchers and practitioners looking to challenge traditional industrial approaches to membrane science and engineering with innovative sustainable processes. This includes academic and industrial chemical and polymer engineers, chemists, materials scientists, and membranologists working on both membranes and membrane processes, as well as Masters and PhD students in engineering, chemistry, biology, biotechnology and medicine
