History of the Institution's Publications

Transactions

The Institution's journals date back to 1836 when the first volume of Transactions was published. Three volumes of the Transactions were published between 1836 and 1842 containing around 80 technical papers.

Minutes of the Proceedings

The first volume of the Institution's Proceedings was published in 1837. Entitled the Minutes of Proceedings, these contained not only papers but also Institution matters such as annual reports, announcements and membership grade transfers as well as abstracts of papers published in other contemporary journals.

Journal

The Minutes of Proceedings continued until 1935 when it was replaced by the Journal which ran until 1951 when it, in turn, was replaced by the Proceedings, Part 1 and Part 2.

Proceedings

The Proceedings continues to be published under this name today, although in 1992 it was further divided into separate subtitles - Civil Engineering, Municipal Engineer, Structures & Buildings, Transport and Water Maritime & Energy (now Water & Maritime Engineering). In 1994 a new part, Geotechnical Engineering, was introduced. Special issues and supplements are occasionally published on selected major projects. Between 1922 and 1935 a separate series of 180 Selected Engineering Papers was ordered by the Institution's Council to be published without any discussion or correspondence.
