Verlagsinformation :: Publisher's information The novels in this collection present a vivid picture of late Regency society clinging to modes of behaviour which would become obsolete a few years into the future, and mark an important point of transition to Victorian cultural values. They offer an opportunity to explore issues related to gender and gender roles. Four of the novels are by women writers; making them available in modern scholarly editions will lead to a wider understanding of the range of the contribution of female authors to new forms of fiction. In the rapidly developing field which studies constructions of masculinity in fiction, the novels offer a series of fascinating case studies in the form of the ubiquitous figure of the dandy which runs as a leitmotif through all the novels selected. This edition will therefore be of interest to students of both the Romantic and the Victorian periods; social historians; literary historians, especially those with an interest in the recovery of forgotten texts; researchers in the field of British political history; feminist literary historians and literary theorists; scholars interested in gender studies or masculinities; and students focusing on the history of the novel in Britain. By extending the availability of out-of-print texts the edition will stimulate further criticism and research. Features: - Texts reprinted in full, reset and annotated - General introduction and introduction to each novel - List of textual variants at the end of each volume Contents:
