Early and Baroque Opera (pre-1750)

The Early and Baroque Opera (pre-1750) collection features nine productions of early works from leading European opera houses including the Dutch National Opera, Teatro La Fenice, and Teatro Real. Performances include Graham Vick's production of Handel's Tamerlano (Teatro Real, 2008), William Christie conducting Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (Teatro Real, 2008) and Pierre Audi's final production as Director of the Dutch National Opera, Landi's Morte d'Orfeo (2018).

This collection includes:

• Teatro Real's majestic production of Handel's vivid tragedy, Tamerlano, featuring Paul McCreesh's authentic and luminous interpretation of the score, stunning theatrical staging by Graham Vick, and designer Richard Hudson's extravagant Baroque-Islamic costumes.
• Dominique Poulange's production of Baldassarre Galuppi's L'Olimpiade, in which The Orchestra Barocca di Venezia, conducted by baroque expert Andrea Marcon, plays on original instruments from the 18th century.
• The 2007 production of Wolf-Ferrari's comic opera La Vedova, filmed live at the Teatro La Fenice in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Goldoni.

Early and Baroque Opera 2

13 landmark productions of early works from leading opera houses including the Opéra Comique, Dutch National Opera and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Performances include: Deborah Warner’s critically acclaimed production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Opéra Comique, 2008), Handel’s rarely performed opera, Deidamia (Dutch National Opera, 2009) and Robert Carsen’s intellectual and stylized production of Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, 2021).

• See how sets and atmosphere work together in Deborah Warner’s production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Opéra Comique, 2008). Ist highly theatrical staging, gymnasium-inspired set and poetic prologue spoken by Fiona Shaw make this one of the most striking modern interpretations of the opera.

This collection showcases the work of leading directors including Laurent Pelly (Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, 2017), Robert Carsen (Mozart's Idomeneo, Teatro Real, 2019), and David McVicar (Mozart's Don Giovanni, The Royal Opera House, 2019, and Die Zauberflöte, The Royal Opera House, 2017).

This collection includes:

• The vibrant and youthful 2017 production of Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia featuring Florian Sempey, Michele Angelini, Catherine Trottmann, and the award-winning team of acclaimed director Laurent Pelly and conductor Jérémie Rhorer.
• David McVicar's classic production of Die Zauberflöte (The Royal Opera, 2017), which transports the audience to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The Stage called it 'a remarkably complete staging of a piece of extraordinary dramatic diversity'.

This collection showcases the work of leading directors including: Tobias Kratzer’s production of Beethoven’s Fidelio (The Royal Opera, 2020), Sir David McVicar’s production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (The Royal Opera, 2022), and Pierre Audi’s production of Gluck’s Orphée et Euridice (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, 2022).

Productions include David McVicar's production of Faust (The Royal Opera, 2019), Puccini's La Bohème conducted by Antonio Pappano (The Royal Opera House, 2017), as well as two documentaries by Kick Films, Global Wagner: From Bayreuth to the World (2020), and Crazy for Opera, which reveals life behind the scenes at the Bavarian State Opera (2017).

This collection includes:

• Nobel Prize-winning writer Dario Fo's inventive production of Gioachino Rossini's comic opera, La Gazzetta.
• The 2014 Dutch National Opera production of L'Étoile, which 'sparkles under [director] Laurent Pelly' (Opera News).
• Richard Jones's acclaimed production of Puccini's most heartrending opera, La Boheme. Productions include: Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen (Deutsche Oper Berlin, 2021), Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov conducted by Antonio Pappano (The Royal Opera, 2016), and Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production of Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten (Bayerische Staatsoper, 2013).

• The world premiere of the full and original version of Merlin by Isaac Albéniz, over a century after he completed the work. For this stunning production, director John Dew created a world of magic and fantasy, using evocative sets and splendid lighting.
• The 2008 Venezia Teatro La Fenice performance of Puccini's La Rondine, which The Times called a 'vibrant production', and commended Graham Vick's direction 'on Peter J. Davison's stunning set'.
