This version of the Nykysuomen etymologinen sanakirja, updated in 2020, is available only in MOT Kielipalvelu. The original author of the dictionary, professor emerita Kaisa Häkkinen, has critically reviewed the etymologies of older etymological dictionaries and the printed version of Nykysuomen etymologinen sanakirja, published in 2004. Data based on outdated audio-historical research have been omitted and explanations have been supplemented, revised and corrected on the basis of sources published after 2004. There are numerous amendments and additions concerning the first appearances of words. New etymological information is provided, especially on recent loans and derivatives. Conclusions about the age and origin of words are explained clearly, and background information about the life of words has been added. Kaisa Häkkinen continues to update the dictionary.

MOT Nykysuomen etymologinen sanakirja offers a multi-millennial cross-section of the general language in Finland today, and about its age and etymological background. The dictionary shows that although layers can be identified and general lines perceived in the development of vocabulary, the history of words is largely the history of individual words.
