Die Sammlung "Regional China and the West, 1759–1972" legt den Fokus auf die regionale Perspektive und das Leben in den verschiedenen Vertragshäfen (Treaty Ports) und dokumentiert die sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen in über 20 chinesischen Küsten- und Binnenstädten über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 200 Jahren. Die Sammlung umfasst ca. 39 Serien, die fast ausschließlich aus den Beständen des britischen Außenministeriums (Foreign Office, FO) aus dem britischen Nationalarchiv stammen. Ergänzt wird dies durch private Sammlungen wichtiger Diplomaten.

Also included are the private and semiofficial correspondence of Sir Henry Pottinger, Sir John N. Jordan, and Lord Edmund Hammond as well as the records and photographs of the British concession in Tianjin. China and the Modern World: Regional China and the West, 1759–1972 provides a significant compendium of historical documents and forms, an ideal complement to Imperial China and the West, Part I and II. Researchers will find valuable insight into Chinese-Western relations primarily from 1830 to 1950, ranging from diplomacy to trade, economy, law, and politics.
