Verlagsinformation :: Publisher's information
This collection publishes online for the first time a wide range of unique primary source documents from The National Archives, London. The collection covers military conflicts in China from the early nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, and offers a British view as recorded in the sources of this crucial period of global history.
The collection covers a fundamental period of modern history. This was a century during which China underwent seismic political, social, and cultural changes, including the radical modernisation of the Chinese armed forces, with the country emerging in 1945 as one of the so-called ‘Big Four’. Britain’s involvement in East Asia over the century waxed and waned, and the British military presence was a major yet complex aspect of the relationship with China. The period was marked by a series of conflicts, political upheavals, interventions, and peacetime activities that had far-reaching consequences for both countries.
Key conflicts and periods covered include:
- The First Opium War (1839-1842)
- The Second Opium War (1856-1860)
- The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864)
- The First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895)
- The Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901)
- The Chinese Warlord Era (c. 1911-1937) and the Chinese Civil War (1927-1949)
- The First World War (1914-1918; Chinese involvement, 1917-1918)
- The Shanghai Crisis (1927)
- The Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945)
Military history is a major focus of the collection, with sources covering the armed forces, naval forces, and air forces all included. Topics such as campaigns and operations, logistics and supply, equipment and deployments, and the conditions of troops are all dealt with in detail. The wide-ranging material also builds a broader picture of the experience of warfare, exploring themes such as intelligence, propaganda, and civilian encounters, and of growing Chinese engagement in global politics and imperialism.
Series included in the collection are:
- ADM (Admiralty)
- AIR (Air Ministry)
- HS (Special Operations Executive)
- WO (War Office)
