Verlagsinformation :: Publisher's information The Concise Dictionary of Medieval Vernacular Greek, 1100-1669 focuses on the vernacular language of Byzantine and Medieval Greek from the 12th till the 17th century. It is the English translation and concise version of the monumental work by Emmanuel Kriaras (1906-2014), Λεξικό της μεσαιωνικής ελληνικής δημώδους γραμματείας 1100-1669 (medieval Greek – early modern Greek). In 1997, under the auspices of the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki, a concise version of the work in 4 volumes started to appear. This version is currently being translated and edited by Georgios K. Giannakis and Antonios Rengakos, and will be published in several updates online. With the launch in April 2026, the first volume has been made available online, which entails approximately 25% of the concise dictionary. New material will be published in regular updates until the project’s completion, planned for December 2028. A print version of the entire work is planned for publication in 2029. In its completed form, the features of the "concise Kriaras" include: Approx. 47,000 entries: Upon completion, the dictionary will comprise of more than 47,000 entries. Citations: in each entry, citations of the use of each lemma in its original medieval Greek context (e.g., literary texts) are provided. Hyperlinked cross-references between the entries Advanced search filters: filters are offered for the following aspects: a) spelling (= headword), b) altspelling (= alternative spelling headword), c) meaning, d) usage (= quotation), e) citation (quotation source), f) expression, g) etymology. Historical explanations & etymology: Historical explanations on each word’s origin, usage context, grammatical construction and etymology are provided in almost every entry. The dictionary is a unique tool for scholars of Byzantine Studies, Classical Studies, Medieval Studies, and Greek linguistics.
