Jedes Dokument wird historisch eingeordnet, Fußnoten erklären, wer erwähnte Personen waren, was historische Begriffe bedeuten und in welchem politischen Kontext ein Brief stand. Der Online-Ausgabe liegt die seit 1976 bisher in 85 Bänden veröffentlichte Printausgabe zugrunde.

Forthcoming volumes in the Revolutionary War and Presidential series will continue to be added following their completion by the Papers of George Washington editorial project.
