This substantial new scholarly collection comprises original research and curated content that iIluminates, analyses and re-evaluates the contribution of key theatre artists from North America and Europe. Field-defining articles provide new readings in theatre history, theory, practice and legacy spanning the last century. This resource offers a significant collection of criticism on modern and world drama and on theories of performance from across the world.

The collection includes:

  • Decades of Modern American Drama: Playwriting from the 1930s to 2009, 8 volumes edited by Brenda Murphy and Julia Listengarten. These volumes include a wide-ranging survey of theatres, companies, dramatists, new movements and developments in response to the economic and political conditions of the day and provide expert analyses of the work of the four most prominent playwrights from each decade.
  • The Great European Stage Directors Sets 1 and 2, 8 volumes edited by Simon Shepherd. These sets provide an authoritative account of the work, lineage and legacy of the most important European stage directors from the late nineteenth century throughout the twentieth century.
  • The Great North American Stage Directors Set 1 and 2, 8 volumes edited by James Peck. These sets offer an unrivalled, authoritative account of the work, lineage and legacy of the major North American theatre directors from the 20th and 21st centuries.
  • Modern and Contemporary World Drama: Critical and Primary Sources, 4 volumes edited by Esther Kim Lee. Contesting a Eurocentric reading or history of modern drama, the articles underscore the importance of migration and transnational movements of dramatic forms, and place emphasis on the transmission and circulation of dramatic theories around the world.
  • Theories of Performance: Critical and Primary Sources, 4 volumes edited by Kelina Gotman. These volumes reflect the radical developments in the broader transdisciplinary critical landscape. These essays include writing from theatre, comparative literature, philosophy, law, history, English, and science and technology and are drawn from South and Southeast Asia, East Asia, Europe, Russia and the post-Soviet context, the Americas, Africa and the Caribbean.
  • The Methuen Drama Handbook of Gender and Theatre edited by Sean Metzger & Roberta Mock. This is a guide to contemporary debates and theatre practices at a time when gender paradigms are both in flux and at the centre of explosive political battlegrounds.
